For the first time in two decades, the United States will produce a new design of the hydrogen bomb. The weapon is meant to ease insecurities caused by the aging of America's nuclear arsenal but probably will be a mortal blow to the administration's credibility as it attempts to deter other countries from building nuclear weapons.

Legislation put forward by the Bush administration this week would legalize the same torture techniques recently banned by the Army. By selectively interpreting the Geneva Conventions, the legislation would allow CIA operatives and even the Army, should it decide to revert to previous rules, to conduct interrogations using unsavory methods.

Paulson as the newest Treasury secretary; here's what we know according to the Washington Post and NYT: He was reluctant to accept the job. He worked in the Pentagon as a young man.
