A Defense Department official may have diverted millions from a Pentagon-funded research website to hire a rogue band of spies he reportedly called "my Jason Bournes" (as in the Matt Damon super assassin). These Jason Bournes, The New York Times reports, allegedly spent time running around both sides of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border looking for militants to have killed.

Taliban Gain Ground, Color on Map

A new map produced by the BBC succinctly demonstrates the weakness of the Pakistan state in combating Taliban militants in the country's North West Frontier Province (NWFP). The map shows only 38% of Pakistan's NWFP to be under government control, while the balance of the region experiences either Taliban presence or control.

Lost in the Rubble

I often visited Nizar Rayan, who was killed Thursday in a targeted assassination by Israel, at his house in the Jabaliya refugee camp when I was in Gaza. His four wives and 11 children also were killed. Rayan's sons, according to their father, strove to be one thing: martyrs for Palestine.

The Pentagon is presenting this plan -- and the media are reporting it -- as a spinoff of a successful strategy in Iraq, not a revival of the secret war that gave rise to Osama bin Laden and the Taliban.

Crackdown in Pakistan

Pakistani officials have responded to the call, coming from India as well as the U.S., to take serious action against militant groups operating in their country. Pakistani forces launched widespread raids late Sunday and arrested Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, believed to be a ringleader behind the recent Mumbai attacks.
