Truthdig received 20 nominations for the 2016 Southern California Journalism Awards sponsored by the Los Angeles Press Club, an organization that supports quality journalism in Southern California. Journalists from press clubs across the country selected the finalists.
“This was the fiercest competition in the Southern California Journalism Awards 58-year history,” the Los Angeles Press Club announced.
Truthdig co-founders, Publisher Zuade Kaufman and Editor in Chief Robert Scheer, were nominated for the best News Organization Exclusive to the Internet.
Truthdig’s original blog, “Ear to the Ground,” was nominated for Group Blog along with its bloggers, Kasia Anderson, Jenna Berbeo, Roisin Davis, Donald Kaufman, Alexander Reed Kelly and Natasha Hakimi Zapata.
Other individual Truthdig nominations include Bill Boyarsky and Robert Scheer for Online Journalists, Boyarsky and Sonali Kolhatkar for Activism Journalism, Kasia Anderson for Entertainment News, and Bill Blum, Chris Hedges and Kolhatkar for Political Commentary.
“We are proud that the exceptional work of our bloggers, columnists and critics is being recognized by this esteemed group,” Zuade Kaufman said. “Our goal is to bring quality independent journalism to the web every day, and these nominations highlight some of our best work and motivate us.”
Truthdig critics also swept the Entertainment Review category. Anderson earned two nominations, and Allen Barra, Gabriel Thompson and Natasha Hakimi Zapata were nominated as well.
“This is an amazing recognition for Truthdig, gaining all five nominations in a category that deals with one of America’s most important exports based here in our hometown,” Scheer said.
The 58th annual Southern California Journalism Award winners will be announced June 26 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
