The Israeli ambassador to the U.S. has said his country’s actions in Gaza, including airstrikes, have been “very measured” in response to Palestinian rocket attacks and a devolving political situation, but that “other actions” may be necessary in the future. An anonymous Israeli official said that could include reoccupying Gaza, which he described as the least desirable scenario.

“Our response so far has been very measured because we understand the game plan of the other side, because we carefully assess the different options,” Israeli ambassador Sallai Meridor told reporters.

“But the situation is very volatile and the trend is very negative, which may necessitate other actions in the future — or not so much in the future, depending on the developments,” he said.

Israel resumed air attacks on Gaza on Tuesday for the first time in six months in response to continuing Palestinian rocket fire. The strikes have so far killed two teenagers and 15 Hamas militants.
