Dems Threaten to Charge Mute Bushies

House Democrats have threatened to push ahead with contempt-of-Congress citations against past and present Bush intimates Harriet Miers, Joshua Bolten and, possibly, Karl Rove. The White House appeared unimpressed, probably because the administration would ultimately oversee any prosecution, via the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia.

The whole fracas has to do with the aides’ refusal to testify on whether U.S. attorneys were fired by the White House for political reasons.

A White House spokesman noted that the president has offered to allow the aides to testify, so long as it was off the record and unrecorded, possibly under water while speaking pig latin.

“It won’t go anywhere,” predicted White House press secretary Dana Perino.

Congressional Democrats nonetheless submitted their 102-page report, and a Republican rebuttal, to the House clerk on Monday afternoon. The report accused Miers of contempt for failing to appear and testify as subpoenaed. She and Bolten were charged with failing to produce documents on whether the prosecutors were fired at the White House’s behest.

Also in the sights of House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich.: Karl Rove, the architect of Bush’s rise to the White House and a top political adviser who left last summer.
