$600 Million to Beef Up Border Security

Who would have thought the comprehensive immigration reform promised by President Obama would include a whopping $600 million for increased security along the U.S.-Mexico border for surveillance technologies and 1,000 more Border Patrol agents?

Obama signed the bill Friday without comment after it was hustled through Congress despite misgivings among some Republicans that it doesn’t go far enough. –JCL

US President Barack Obama has signed into law a $600m (£385m) bill providing increased security along the US-Mexico border.

The US Senate had reconvened on Thursday during its August recess to pass the measure.

The funds will mostly be directed to activities on the south-west border, such as hiring 1,000 border patrol agents.

Money will also pay for surveillance technology, including unmanned drones.
