It’s possible that even greater shame awaits the U.S. in 2007, apparently as early as next month. From the NYT: “An Iraqi appeals court today upheld a death sentence for Saddam Hussein in a decision that clears the way for his execution within 30 days, Iraqi officials said.”

New York Times:

A member of Mr. Hussein’s defense team, Ramsey Clark, said in Washington last week that the United States will shame itself and be responsible for more bloodshed in Iraq if it allows Mr. Hussein to be executed.

Describing the trial in which Mr. Hussein was convicted and sentenced to death last month as “palpably unfair” and “egregiously vindictive,” Mr. Clark, a former attorney general, said the United States had “the highest moral and legal obligation” not to turn the cases against Mr. Hussein and his co-defendants over to the Iraqis.
