The weekly news is like a recurring bad dream that is becoming an even worse nightmare. While the investor class cheers a rising stock market, the rest of us sink. The headline that jumped out at us this week came from Bloomberg News: “CEO Pay 1,795-to-1 Multiple of Wages Skirts U.S. Law.”

As people see that the government represents Wall Street and concentrated wealth instead of their interests, more of them are becoming fearless.

By Chris Hedges — Those we now deify for resisting evil were, when they found the courage to rebel, condemned by the public, criminalized by the law and declared traitors by the state. Rebellion is a lonely pursuit when it begins.

Anti-U.S. cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has returned home to Iraq from his self-imposed exile in Iran, delivering a speech urging support for the new Maliki government and resistance against the U.S.—but not necessarily through armed struggle.

By Chris Hedges — Do not fear Glenn Beck or Sarah Palin. Fear the underlying corporate power structure, which no one, from Barack Obama to the right-wing nut cases who pollute the airwaves, can alter.

By Chris Hedges — Crazed and distraught with grief, the father went into his garage and took out five gallons of gasoline and a propane torch. He walked past the three Marines in their dress blues and began to smash the windows of the government van with a hammer.

The Truthdig columnist begins this speech to the Veterans for Peace convention by saying, “Physical courage is something you see on a battlefield. Moral courage you almost never see.”

Many in the Western media present Palestinian politics as a primitive, suicide-bombing expression of anti-Israeli anger. But nothing could be further from the truth. Watch a long-form debate between the two largest political factions, Fatah and Hamas, as they discuss reconciliation and the future of resistance.

File this one under “Choose Your Battles”: The Resistance, a national Christian group based in San Diego, has a problem with Starbucks’ new, slightly-more-sexed-up cup design, featuring a bustier version of the familiar siren depicted on the coffee company’s logo. Resistance founder Mark Dice pointed to the label’s “naked woman ... with her legs spread like a prostitute” and said Starbucks “might as well call themselves”—wait for it—“Slutbucks.”

By Chris Hedges — The refusal to pay my taxes if we go to war with Iran, and the portion of my taxes spent on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan if we do not cut off funding for these two conflicts, is not a means. It is an end. I do not know if my refusal, and the refusal of others, will be effective in halting these wars. All I know is that it is worth doing.

Anti-American Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr ordered his militia to redouble efforts to oust U.S. forces and called on Iraq’s army and police to join him. The U.S. military, meantime, said 10 American troops were killed over the weekend, including six on Sunday.

The U.S. military announced Thursday that it had launched the “largest air assault since the U.S.-led invasion” in 2003. As it turns out, however, it was little more than a photo op. According to Time magazine, “there were no airstrikes… no leading insurgents were nabbed… there were no shots fired at all,” and U.S. forces met no resistance.
Can anyone say Potemkin assault?
UPDATE: The L.A. Times is now reporting that the operation has yielded 48 arrests, including at least one major insurgent ringleader, along with seizures of weapons and training manuals.
