When the Word ‘Terrorism’ Is Invoked, Ask Who Benefits (Video)
Political theorist Brad Evans tells "The Trews" host Russell Brand: "[Terrorism] demands a certain form of intervention, which is heightened securitization, heightened militarization."
In a discussion on “The Trews” about Fox News coverage of the recent shooting of police officers, one fatally, on Paris’ Champs-Élysées, political theorist Brad Evans tells host Russell Brand that “[w]henever the word ‘terrorism’ is invoked, the first question you need to ask is: Who benefits?”
When such an incident is immediately characterized by media as terrorism, it prompts a certain response, Evans says: the ramping up of security. “[Terrorism] demands a certain form of intervention, which is heightened securitization, heightened militarization — which just so happens to come at a time when the French election is taking place,” Evans continues. The implication is that a far-right candidate such as Marine Le Pen, who advanced to the runoff, could be a political beneficiary of the incident.
Evans says that if Islamic State was behind the shooting, the reaction to it was “exactly what ISIS would want.”
