Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) showed off to Congress a model of an electric fence he designed for America's southern border. He said its nonlethal current works fine with barnyard animals. The Calif governor said about the group of private citizens who are patrolling the country's border with Mexico, "I support any time that a civilian wants to go and do the job that law enforcement cannot do" (Story--scroll down) Ironically, the governor made the statement at a campaign stop while trying to burnish his credentials with Latino voters--many of whom view Minutemen as akin to the KKK Also, higher up in the piece: Karl Rove gets booed while trying to woo Latinos at a conference.

Senate Passes Landmark Immigration Reform Bill

The legislation would mark the most significant changes in immigration law in two decades. The bill contains a guest-worker program and offers undocumented workers a path to legal residence and even citizenship (after paying fines). It is far more immigrant-friendly than the House version. Now comes the fight over reconciling the two bills.
