After enduring many grueling weeks of campaigning and three tense debates, John McCain and Barack Obama turned up in tuxes for Thursday night's Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York to cut loose and try out some lighter material on a crowd ready to laugh, and they laughed as well -- at themselves and (especially) at each other.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg writes in a New York Times op-ed "I am not -- and will not be -- a candidate for president." Thus ends months of speculation on whether the multibillionaire would jump into the race as an independent candidate. Bloomberg writes that he may endorse a candidate who "takes an independent, nonpartisan approach" and "embraces practical solutions that challenge party orthodoxy." Is he talking about Ralph Nader?

Although some politicians and media pundits who lean toward the right of the political spectrum regard global warming as an overhyped pet issue that mostly gets liberals hot under the collar, New York City mayor and media baron Mike Bloomberg (who's moved around quite a bit on said spectrum) suggests that it is potentially much worse than the threat of terrorism. He made the comment Monday at a U.N. climate change conference.

The New York mayor has been, by some accounts, considering an independent run for president, but now there just doesn't seem to be much of a point.
