Jimmy Carter was ultimately undone by a hostage crisis and the word Somalia still haunts Bill Clinton's legacy. While the weekend rescue of a hostage held by Somali pirates was of a much smaller scale and under totally different circumstances than those events, President Obama must be relieved that it is behind him, a success. And now that it's over, it seems the president was more involved than he initially let on.

French Employees Hold Bosses Hostage

Four higher-ups at the Caterpillar construction equipment office in Grenoble, France, were taken hostage on Tuesday by hundreds of employees demanding negotiations after the company announced it would cut 700 jobs. Even more startling is that this latest episode was but one of three similar boss-blockading incidents in France this month.

Coordinated Attacks Kill at Least 100 in Mumbai

India's busiest city came under fire Thursday morning (local time) as gunmen attacked at least seven targets, including two luxury hotels, a train station and a hospital. The attacks killed at least 100 people and injured hundreds more. Officials said the death toll included the head of Mumbai's counterterrorism unit.

Hostages Released From Clinton Office

A man who said he had a bomb strapped to his chest took and eventually released several hostages at a Hillary Clinton campaign office Friday. The man demanded to speak with Hillary, who was in the Washington, D.C., area at the time. Either for safety reasons or simply to not be outdone, a Barack Obama campaign office also evacuated.

Search for Missing Troops Continues Despite Threats

U.S. and Iraqi forces are continuing their search for three missing American soldiers, despite threats from the Sunni insurgent coalition that claims to have taken them as hostages. Some 4,000 troops along with helicopters, jets and unmanned aerial vehicles are involved in the effort. The Pentagon said on Monday that it believed the soldiers had fallen into enemy hands.

Lebanon “Torn to Shreds”

Fouad Siniora, the Lebanese prime minister, called for an immediate cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah and announced that more than 300 people had been killed in his country during the week of attacks. Twenty-nine Israelis have been killed since the fighting began.
