U.S. Prepared to Join Direct Talks With Iran

May 31, 2006
Sec. of State Rice said America will join Europe in direct talks if Iran suspends its programs to enrich uranium and reprocess spent nuclear fuel. It's a dramatic about-face, and comes a mere three weeks after the Iranian president sent a personal letter to Bush--the first direct communication between the two countries in over 20 years.

Truthdigger of the Day: Steve Almond

May 14, 2006
Almond, an adjunct professor at Boston College, has resigned his post to protest the college's choice of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as commencement speaker. "I cannot, in good conscience, exhort my students to pursue truth and knowledge, then collect a paycheck from an institution that displays such flagrant disregard for both," he writes. Imagine if Colin Powell or George Tenet had shown this kind of moral fortitude. There might not have been a war.

And while that's probably not a bad idea, it's hard to imagine that any amount of TV would meaningfully distract attention from the spectacle of the American occupation of Iraq.

Dream On, Condi

Feb 15, 2006
There is no way to soft-pedal it: The astounding rise of an anti-American firebrand like Moqtada al-Sadr is an indicator of how wide and complete a political defeat pro-Western forces have suffered in Iraq.

Friends Don’t Let Friends Use Torture

Dec 4, 2005
Condi Rice is so tired of Old Europe and its human rights complaints. Big deal, so the CIA is using Soviet era torture camps in Eastern Europe to stash "war on terror" prisoners. Don't those fusspots in the EU understand that our use of torture is fundamentally different because we are the good guys and that Eastern Europe has been liberated? That outmoded European slogan of "friends don't let friends use torture" is so over.
