The Supreme Court of Connecticut joined the ranks of California and Massachusetts on Friday to (finally) legalize same-sex marriage. The decision comes at a potentially prickly time as the presidential election looms, although both John McCain and Barack Obama have, so far, exerted little rhetorical effort to make gay rights a wedge issue in the campaign. On Monday, gay and lesbian couples celebrated the California Supreme Court's recent lifting of the ban on gay marriage by, well, getting married. Tuesday is expected to be a bigger day, though, for devoted duos to make it official, as that's the day when most California counties are slated to start giving gay couples marriage licenses. John McCain toed his party line well in his appearance Thursday on "Ellen," where he managed to appear excruciatingly uncomfortable as he listened to host Ellen DeGeneres' explanation of her pro-gay-marriage stance and as she quizzed him about his own decidedly different opinion on the subject. For the second time, the California Legislature has passed a law that would make marriage in the state gender-neutral. The governor vetoed the first effort back during his more conservative phase. The city of Madison, Wis, will allow public officeholders to protest the state's gay marriage ban when they're sworn in this April, adding this caveat to their oaths: "I pledge to work to eliminate this section from the constitution and work to prevent any discriminatory impacts from its application". Both houses of New Jersey's Legislature have approved the creation of civil unions, granting the protections of marriage to gay couples as required by a recent court ruling.
