Writing gives people an opportunity to examine the world through a different lens. One of the goals of Homeboy Industries’ creative writing class is to provide students an outlet to express themselves. It also allows them to reflect on and analyze their lives in a new light.

For many of those at Homeboy Industries, the relationship with authority is complex. That is why this chapter’s theme of authority figures is so powerful, as the writers explore their relationship with parents, teachers and police.
