Truthdig Earns Seven Prizes from LA Press Club
A breakdown of the site's awards at the 2023 Southern California Journalism Awards.Truthdig relaunched in November of 2022. We’re proud to announce that our newsroom just earned seven LA Press Club Awards over the weekend for stories published in just two months.
Truthdig won first place in the Election Editorials category. “Well thought out, fun reads that support their thesis in an entertaining way that keeps the reader interested,” the judges said about Martina Moneke and Bill Blum’s series of editorials about the 2024 election.
Dawn Paley won first place in News, Foreign Correspondents with her story, “Mexico’s War Against Migrants,” which traces the journey of a man and his family trying to reach America from Venezuela. “Paley offers great in-depth reporting and an easy to follow narrative style despite the complex issues involved,” the judges said. The story also won Paley third place in the category of Immigration Reporting.
Kamin Mohammadi won two awards with “Women Life Freedom,” a profile of Mahsa Jina Amini and the central role of the country’s Kurdish minority in Iran’s female-led uprising. She won second place in the Gender and Society Reporting category, as well as second place in the category of Columnist or Critic, Foreign Correspondents.
“The Politicized Virus,” by Michael Balter, explores why the pandemic became a divisive, partisan issue. The story won third place in Pandemic Reporting. And Eileen Cronin and Ania Lakritz won third place in Soft News Feature, General News, for their writing about chronically homeless people who suffer disabilities, in “Unhoused and Disabled in America.”
