Secret talks between Turkey’s foreign minister and Israel’s cabinet minister have occurred in an attempt to remedy relations between the two countries in the wake of Israel’s bloody raid on a Turk-led aid flotilla bound for the Gaza Strip in June. –JCL

Benjamin Ben-Eliezer, Israel’s trade and industry minister, met Ahmet Davutoglu in Brussels to discuss ways of repairing bilateral ties.

While a Turkish diplomat confirmed that the two had met in Brussels, Israeli officials refused to be drawn on the talks, confirming only that Ben Eliezer had met with “a Turkish official.”

“Davutoglu reiterated the steps Turkey expects to be taken within this frame, for the improvement of ties,” Burak Ozugergin, Turkey’s foreign ministry spokesman, told the Reuters news agency on Thursday.

Eight Turks and a dual US-Turkish citizen were killed when Israeli commandos stormed the Turkish-flagged ship Mavi Marmara on May 31.
