Stampede at German Music Festival Kills 19

Nineteen people were killed in a crowd panic at a free German dance music festival. Officials have launched an investigation into the deaths, which reportedly occurred after authorities repeatedly were warned about overcrowding. About 1.4 million people attended the event in Duisburg.

Some critics have blamed the festival’s organizers, claiming there was only one entrance into the “Love Parade” and that complaints against the logistics had been filed three days before the accident. –JCL

Witnesses criticised the decision to have just one entrance through a tunnel to the Love Parade, and said they had warned police about overcrowding.

The mayor of Duisburg, where the festival took place, said a security plan had been worked out beforehand.
