MSNBC “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough ripped the lawmakers responsible for blocking a bipartisan compromise on gun reform that would have expanded background checks a day after the legislation fell six votes short of the 60 needed to pass.

The former Republican congressman saved his toughest words for members of his own party, warning them that the GOP was “heading towards extinction.”

Of the 46 senators who voted against the measure, four were Democrats and the rest were Republicans.

“You don’t ignore 90 percent of what the voting population wants when you’re talking about the safety of Americans, of our families, of our communities, of our schools,” he said as photos of the senators who killed the gun reform bill were flashed on the screen. “I just want to be clear. I said this party is heading towards extinction. Talking about the 2013 version of the Republican Party. A new Republican Party, though, is going to come in its place. This sort of extremism is going to be called out by the 90 percent.”

He added, “We’re the 90 percent and we are going to win.”
