“The Internet is on one hand the saving grace of American democracy — it could be a great tool for an informed public,” Scheer said during the nearly hourlong interview. “On the other hand, if it becomes an instrument of surveillance, and people engage in self-censorship — then it becomes the enemy of freedom. And the balance has moved in that direction.”
