The government of Niger has appealed to the international community for assistance for almost 60,000 people who have fled to Niger from Libya since fighting began in February.

A representative of the International Organization of Migration predicts the flow of refugees crossing Niger’s border through the harsh Libyan desert will not end anytime soon. –ARK

Niger’s government has appealed for help to deal with some 59,000 Africans who have fled Libya since February.

The International Organization of Migration told the BBC many of them arrive penniless and in a bad condition after gruelling desert trips.

The IOM’s Abibatou Wane said the influx from Libya was expected to continue.

[. . .] The UN believes at least 335,000 people have fled Libya since the beginning of the conflict, including at least 200,000 foreign nationals.
