At a news conference in late July, New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie loudly defended his appointment of a Muslim lawyer to a state judgeship, saying that conservatives’ fear of shariah law “is crap.”

Months ago, Christie nominated Sohail Mohammed, a Muslim-American lawyer who represented many of those who were wrongfully detained by the FBI shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. A great admirer of Mohammad’s work and long-time friend, Christie said he was proud to help put the second-ever Muslim-American on the bench in New Jersey. — BF
