While 6,000 barrels is a start, it represents only about a third of the oil being leaked into the Gulf of Mexico each day from the blown well. BP is hoping to increase the funneling volume in the days ahead. –JCL

A special cap funnelling oil from the Gulf of Mexico spill appears to be having some success, a US coast guard official has said.
Thad Allen said 6,000 barrels of oil were captured in a 24-hour period since the procedure began on Thursday.
This represents between one third and one half of the estimated oil being leaked every day since the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded in April.
Mr Allen said BP hoped to increase the amount captured in the next few days.
