Larry Craig, whose alleged shenanigans in a Minnesota airport have captured national attention, announced he will resign at the end of the month. He is likely to be replaced by a fellow Republican, whom the governor of Idaho will appoint.
Craig continues to deny that he is gay or did anything wrong, but says the possibility of legal action would be too much of a distraction from his duties.
Your support is crucial…Los Angeles Times:
Idaho Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter, who joined Craig for his announcement at a Boise news conference, is expected to appoint a fellow Republican, most likely Lt. Gov. James E. Risch, to serve out the remainder of Craig’s term.
“What is best for Idaho has always been the focus of my efforts, and it is no different today,” said Craig, who added that he made his decision “with sadness and deep regret.”
Flanked by his wife and two children before a crowd of reporters, TV cameras, supporters and hecklers, Craig again apologized “for what I have caused.”
With an uncertain future and a new administration casting doubt on press freedoms, the danger is clear: The truth is at risk.
