The always smart and incisive Timothee Parrique, an economist at Lund University’s School of Economics and Management in Sweden, recently gave a talk at the Beyond Growth conference that should be required listening for anyone interested in hard truths about “green growth.”
Writes Parrique in summarizing his presentation:
A truly green growth needs to be (1) absolutely decoupled from (2) all environmental pressures (3) wherever these happen (4) at a pace that is sufficiently fast, and (5) that continues over time. This green growth has never been achieved. If you believe in green growth, the burden of proof is on you and you need to bring proof that these five things are possible. Waiting for that, we may want to start working on a sustainability transition that is actually feasible.
