President George W Bush will delay his announcement of possible changes to US policy in Iraq until after the new year, the White House has confirmed.
The speech – which had been expected before Christmas – was “not ready yet”, White House spokesman Tony Snow said.
The news comes as Mr Bush held a second day of talks with top US and Iraqi officials on the Iraq issue.
The talks follow a recent report on US policy in Iraq that called for urgent action to stop “a slide towards chaos”.
The high-level review by the Iraq Study Group (ISG) published last week said the current US strategy of staying the course was no longer viable.

On Sunday's "Last Week Tonight" show, John Oliver took on LGBT discrimination, pointing out that 31 states still do not have anti-discrimination laws in place and saying this makes it “surprisingly easy for people to be fired, evicted or refused service just because they are gay."
Over the president's objections, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to visit the president of Syria next weekend. Pelosi's spokesman said the meeting was inspired by the Iraq Study Group, which recommended engaging regional players -- a recommendation the Bush administration has so far ignored.
Columnist and comedian Will Durst explores the irony of delivering a report to a president who doesn't read. Of the Iraq Study Group's 79 recommendations, Durst writes: "Unfortunately none of them involved the President and his entire Cabinet resigning, proving perhaps this study group should've studied more."
