The “Hardball” host is known for being outspoken, but apparently even he thinks he can go too far. Chris Matthews has apologized for suggesting that Hillary Clinton’s political success stemmed from having an unfaithful husband.

Controversy erupted after Matthews made remarks on Joe Scarborough’s “Morning Joe” on MSNBC that “the reason she’s a U.S. senator, the reason she’s a candidate for president, the reason she may be a front-runner is her husband messed around. That’s how she got to be senator from New York. We keep forgetting it. She didn’t win there on her merit.”

Matthews first reminded viewers Thursday of his love of politics and country, and that he always speaks his mind without submitting to political correctness.

Then came the apology, where Matthews said it was not “fair to imply that Hillary’s whole career depended on being a victim of an unfaithful husband.”
