It was a lineup designed to bring women at the Republican National Convention ever forward and onward into the year 1800, but alas, Sarah Palin couldn’t make it. Undeterred in their cause, conservative stalwart Phyllis Schlafly and radio host Laura Ingraham soldiered on, stirring up fellow She-publicans at their joint appearance Tuesday at the RNC.

Mrs. Schlafly said that Ms. Palin had committed to be the keynote speaker here before she knew she would be nominated for vice president, and now she has to focus on her big speech for tomorrow night.
The event went ahead anyway, and, as Mrs. Schlafly began speaking, a protest erupted, with a demonstrator coming on the stage with a sign, which we couldn’t quite see. Mrs. Schlafly took the sign and ripped it up as security guards removed the young woman. Then the audience broke out into “God Bless America.”
Mrs. Schlafly then introduced a “surprise” guest, Laura Ingraham, the conservative radio talk-show host, who launched a blistering attack against the “elite” media and others who, she said, were unfairly attacking Ms. Palin.
Ms. Ingraham gave a spirited defense of Ms. Palin and delivered the red meat that the audience of roughly 250 or 300 people here in a hotel ballroom seemed to crave. She said that the “entrenched elite” — and here she pointed to The New York Times and its three stories on today’s front page about Ms. Palin — opposed the governor “because of one issue — life.” There was big applause here.
