Tuesday’s elections were dispiriting in some ways for Democrats, particularly in Virginia and New Jersey (not to mention Maine, though that issue cuts across party lines), but the New York Daily News’ Michael McAuliff wonders whether another, more encouraging object lesson for 2010 might’ve happened in upstate New York. –KA

Conservative Doug Hoffman lost the 23rd congressional district seat in upstate New York held by Republicans for more than 100 years to Democrat Bill Owens after chasing GOP moderate Dede Scozzafava from the race.

President Obama’s campaign veterans are ecstatic over Owens’ win.

“NY-23 is an interesting one and very good for us across the country,” the insider said. “This is a big problem for the Republicans.”

Some conservatives wholeheartedly agree. “The Democrats won not because they were brilliant but because Republicans were stupid,” said former Arkansas Governor, presidential contender and conservative luminary Mike Huckabee. “Republicans fumbled the ball, and Democrats jumped on it in the end zone.”
