Despite upward of 5,000 complaints filed by locals, a pipeline that would carry fracked gas into New York City via a facility on the banks of the Hudson River is slated for completion in fall 2013.
As the video below shows, the Spectra pipeline is a project of Spectra Energy, a Texas-based company with a dismal safety record that includes 17 safety violations in 2011, a $15 billion fine for contaminated pipelines and multiple facility explosions. Spectra was once named the No. 1 greenhouse gas polluter in British Columbia.
A pipeline similar to the one being built on Manhattan’s west side blew up in San Bruno, Calif., in September 2010, killing eight people and destroying 38 homes. Explosions are just one of the potential disasters, however. The pipeline will carry fracked gas from Canada’s Marcellus Shale, an area with a high concentration of radon. Radon is the top cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers.
