Democrats ‘Can’t Keep Up’ With GOP Campaign Spending

In the battle for control of Congress, top Democrats are conceding that they may not have the cash to compete with Republicans.

With a 55-seat majority, and six more seats at risk than the Republicans, quotes like that from the Senate’s No. 2 leader, Dick Durbin of Illinois, don’t bode well for the Dems:

“We’re faced with a grim reality that more money is being spent earlier in some of these hot races than we’ve ever seen,” Durbin told The New York Times. “We’re spending some, but we can’t keep up with them.”

Of course that could be a fundraising ploy (it’s easier to raise money from your fans when they are worried), but Democrats have real cause for concern. As we’ve blogged before, voters tend to punish the president’s party in midterm elections when his approval is low, and Gallup has President Obama’s job approval at a mere 42 percent. Congress scores just 12 percent approval.
