Truthdig Editor in Chief Robert Scheer recently hosted veterans Ron Kovic, an anti-war activist and author, and documentary filmmaker Oliver Stone at the University of Southern California for a discussion on war, peace and the American military-industrial complex. Kovic and Stone served in the Vietnam War, an experience that shaped their lives and their politics.

In the clip above, Kovic explains his strong opposition to a current political issue: President Trump’s proposed ban on transgender people serving in the military.

“They are supremely patriotic,” Kovic says of transgender military members, in response to a question from an audience member. “They’re committed to this country, they’ve risked their life on behalf of this country, whether the policy [that sent them to war] was right or wrong—and in almost every case it was wrong.”
