It’s been a wet and deadly winter for illegal immigrants crossing into Arizona from Mexico, with nine border crossers dying from hypothermia since November. That equals the number who died trying to make the crossing in the previous three winters combined.

Hundreds of thousands of freezing Europeans are waiting for Russia and Ukraine to resolve a pricing dispute, while EU officials engage in scramblepants diplomacy to get the natural gas flowing again. Russia has accused Ukraine of siphoning off gas, which runs from Mother Russia through Ukraine and into Europe, where some areas are very, very cold.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has declared this winter the warmest on record for the Northern Hemisphere. So far, 2007 appears likely to rank as the warmest overall year. Annual temperatures have broken the record in 10 of the last dozen years.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in California after nearly three-quarters of the state’s citrus crop was wiped out by subfreezing weather last week, causing up to $1 billion in losses. Prices around the country are expected to rise drastically, as California is the nation’s major producer of fresh citrus fruit.
