On Sunday’s “Face the Nation,” Stephen Colbert discussed his pivot into network TV and what it’s like to be a comedian in tragic times. Then he moved on to Donald Trump, showing genuine shock that he’s still leading the race for the GOP nomination.

“I really didn’t think he would be doing this well,” Colbert said. “He’s my old character with $10 billion. He’s completely playing on an emotional level but doing it better.”

On “The Colbert Report,” Colbert played a right-wing blowhard with a casual relationship to facts, much like the current GOP frontrunner.

Colbert also addressed why comedy is important in times of confusion.

“You can’t laugh and be afraid at the same time,” he insisted.
