Black Lives Matter activists on Friday interrupted Hillary Clinton’s rallying of black voters at Clark Atlanta University. Moments into a campaign event where Clinton was set to unveil proposals to reform the criminal justice system to a crowd of roughly 2,100, protesters drowned out a 15-minute portion of the Democratic presidential candidate’s speech.

The protest stemmed from widespread feeling that Clinton is not doing enough to address police brutality and the systematic incarceration of African-Americans.

The protesters, part of the #AUCShutItDown coalition made up of members of the Atlanta University Center, tweeted out this statement before the demonstration, with the hashtags #Hillary4Who and #AUCShutItDown.

This year, the ground feels uncertain — facts are buried and those in power are working to keep them hidden. Now more than ever, independent journalism must go beneath the surface.

At Truthdig, we don’t just report what's happening — we investigate how and why. We follow the threads others leave behind and uncover the forces shaping our future.

Your tax-deductible donation fuels journalism that asks harder questions and digs where others won’t.
