If early tallies in several states were any indication, voter turnout for Tuesday’s midterms could reach record-breaking proportions.

But that was only a projection, and Americans are likely to be leery of pre-election polls after, say, Nov. 9, 2016. Some commentators also reserved judgment in the lead-up to the event itself, as what may once have seemed like reliable gauges no longer held the same power of prognostication.

As of around 8 p.m. EST, actual news of wins in states like Virginia and Vermont started to hit the wires. It’s going to be a long night.
