Pastor Says Border Patrol Worked Him Over

Pastor Steven Anderson of Tempe, Ariz., says he was Tasered, assaulted and denied medical treatment after he refused to submit to a search by Border Patrol officers at an immigration checkpoint east of San Diego. The ACLU has called the area a "Constitution-free zone" where such abuse has become commonplace.

Border Patrol, Protesters Clash at Mexican Border

About 30 demonstrators taking part in a three-day, bi-national "No Borders Camp" protest were attacked Sunday by about 100 Border Patrol officers at the end of the last day, The San Diego Independent Media Center charged. The media center said that the officers used pepper gas, tazers and batons, beating two or three demonstrators severely and detaining three.

Inspired by care for his daughter and an eleventh-hour decision, as he put it, to "lead with my heart," San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders (a Republican, as a Truthdig reader pointed out) said Wednesday that he would "take a stand on equality and social justice" and come out, as it were, in favor of gay marriage.
