Putin Disbands Russian Gov’t

President Vladimir Putin dissolved the Russian government in a move designed to clear out the upper levels of power before his expected exit from office in the spring. Among those ousted in Wednesday's Kremlin shakeup was Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov, who may be replaced by his first deputy prime minister, Sergei Ivanov.

Clinton Wants Iraqi PM Canned

Hillary Clinton has added her voice to a growing chorus blaming the lack of progress in Iraq on Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Uninspired by President Bush's expression of renewed confidence in the embattled PM, Clinton said she hopes the Iraqi parliament will oust Maliki when it returns from its vacation.

Iraq Nears Oil Sharing Deal

The Iraqi Cabinet has approved an oil revenue sharing plan that would divide profits among the provinces based on population, and allow foreign oil companies unprecedented access to Iraq's reserves. Distributing the wealth of Iraq's natural resources has been a major political obstacle, as most of the nation's current oil fields are in Shiite territory.

A Bid to Ostracize Moqtada al-Sadr

Iraqi politicians have been meeting, with help from the Bush administration, to see if they can form a new coalition in Parliament to sideline the troublemaking Moqtada al-Sadr. The new group of Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites would have to attract moderates to find a way to handle Sadr's militia, with its estimated 60,000 men.

Citing the collapse of unity talks, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has threatened to call for early elections less than a year after Hamas took control of parliament. A leading member of Hamas called the move "a clear coup against democracy."
