The power of Oprah Winfrey's endorsement is clearly quantifiable when it comes to her "favorite things" (eg book sales), but how about her favorite people (e Barack Obama)? Well, a scholarly duo from the University of Maryland came up with 1 million votes as the impressive, if somewhat strangely derived, number that represents the boost Oprah has given Obama since she gave him her official stamp of approval.

Rather Slaps CBS With $70M Suit

It's been 15 months since Dan Rather's former host network forced him out of the top spot on the "CBS Evening News," and now he's giving his erstwhile employer a number of strong reasons why he thinks that was no way to treat an anchor -- 70 million reasons, to be precise.

Let those numbers sink in for a minute. 1 in 136. According to government statistics, roughly 2.2 million U.S. residents were in prisons and jails last summer. It's by far the highest per capita rate of any country in the world. And it's mostly due to our unforgivably barbaric drug policies.

Lindsey Graham: "The idea of collecting millions or thousands of phone numbers, how does that fit into following the enemy?" Democratic Sen.
