Mexico City to Decriminalize Abortion

If a Mexican woman has an abortion, she could find herself in jail unless she had been raped, her life was at risk or there was a likelihood of severe birth defects. But that's about to change in the capital city, home to one-fifth of Mexico's population, where the legislature has voted by a wide margin to decriminalize abortion.

Court Documents Link ‘Death House’ to High-Ranking U.S. Officials

The Observer's online edition says it has obtained documents that show U.S. officials allowed a drug informant to continue a campaign of murder in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, so as to preserve his ability to share information. Mexico City Backs Gay Unions

In the face of heated opposition, Mexico City's Assembly passed legislation allowing gays the rights and privileges of civil unions. Mayor Alejandro Encinas is expected to endorse the law, which will also offer protection to heterosexual couples.

U.S. Seen as Threat by Allies

A recent set of polls conducted in Britain, Canada, Mexico and Israel found a majority of people there believe the U.S. has made the world less safe. In the British survey, George W. Bush was seen as a greater threat to world peace than either Kim Jong-il or Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

A Mexican election tribunal has denied presidential candidate Manuel Lopéz Obrador a full recount of votes cast in last month's election. The ruling will surely disappoint the thousands of Obrador supporters who have been protesting in Mexico City for weeks.

The FBI obtained Mexico's voter lists via the same contractor that Florida Gov Jeb Bush used to scrub alleged felons from the voter rolls The FBI supposedly obtained the lists as part of counter-terror operations, but there's reason to suspect those lists will end up helping President Bush's favored candidate into office in Mexico (more) .
