San Diego Mayor Backs Gay Marriage

Inspired by care for his daughter and an eleventh-hour decision, as he put it, to "lead with my heart," San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders (a Republican, as a Truthdig reader pointed out) said Wednesday that he would "take a stand on equality and social justice" and come out, as it were, in favor of gay marriage.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has until mid-October to put his pen where his mouth is on gay issues. For the second time, the California Legislature has passed a law that would make marriage in the state gender-neutral. The governor vetoed the first effort back during his more conservative phase.

New Jersey's civil union law has now taken effect, allowing same-sex couples many of the rights afforded by marriage. California, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts and to some extent Maine offer similar protections.
