Journalist Marc Cooper was serving as personal translator to Chilean president Salvador Allende when the 1973 U.S.-backed coup led by Augusto Pinochet forced him to flee the country. In January, Cooper returned to Santiago to observe the country’s political situation 50 years later. He found a Chile transformed but uncertain, struggling to chart a course forward one year after the election of its first leftist government since Allende.
