This Columbus Day May Be Over, but Why Isn’t the Ridiculous Holiday Defunct?
Seriously, why do we still celebrate Columbus Day when, as a "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" segment puts it, Christopher Columbus was a "murderous, egomaniac whose most famous discovery was a case of getting lost and refusing to ask for directions"?Seriously, why do we still celebrate Columbus Day when, as a “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” segment puts it, Christopher Columbus was a “murderous, egomaniac whose most famous discovery was a case of getting lost and refusing to ask for directions”? Seattle has the right idea by changing the nature of the holiday to celebrate indigenous people and “honor the first Americans” instead of the explorer. The rest of America needs to follow its example. Oh, and raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour like the Washington city did.
Seattle is certainly on a roll these days. It probably has something to do with the fact that it is open-minded enough to elect a socialist official to the City Council. Whatever it is, it seems Seattle is leading the way on a lot of important changes.
