‘The Daily Show’: Jon Stewart Takes on Walmart, Black Friday
Jon Stewart was highly critical of the media outlets that have vilified the big box retailer's employees for wanting to unionize, and for speaking out for better pay and benefits.
On Tuesday night’s “Daily Show,” Jon Stewart ripped into Walmart as well as the media’s coverage of Black Friday and the anti-Walmart union rallies that took place over the holiday weekend. Stewart was highly critical of the media outlets that have vilified the big box retailer’s employees for wanting to unionize, and for speaking out for better pay and benefits.
“What? You bastards,” he said jokingly of the “greedy, hourly, slightly over the poverty line employees” who are asking to make a livable wage and have access to health care.
He also defended the workers who walked out or protested over having to report for duty on Thanksgiving Day. Stewart satirically said that the employees should be thankful they get paid to watch the Black Friday shopping spectacle.
“You get to work on Walmart on Thanksgiving Day. A rink side shift to the greatest show on earth,” Stewart said, playing video of the ensuing chaos that erupted when the retailer opened Thursday night. “Do you know how much people pay to go to fights like that? You get paid … some.”
