West wrote the book with Christa Buschendorf, a professor and chair of American Studies at Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main in Germany. Its publisher, Beacon Press, describes the volume as “an unflinching look at nineteenth- and twentieth-century African American leaders and their visionary legacies.”
