So a Republican senator from the Deep South who loves to tell other people if and how they should have sex, has been exposed as a former client of a prominent D.C. madam? You say this ardent defender of the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman has “asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession and marriage counseling”? You wonder if God is just mailing in his storylines these days?

“Out of respect for my family, I will keep my discussion of the matter there — with God and them,” said Louisiana Sen. David Vitter, who apparently beat the press to the punch after his telephone number appeared among those released by the so-called D.C. Madam, Deborah Jeane Palfrey. Vitter is in his first Senate term but served in the House for five years, where he co-sponsored the Federal Marriage Amendment.

Deborah Jeane Palfrey is accused by federal prosecutors of racketeering by running a prostitution ring that netted more than $2 million over 13 years, beginning in 1993. She contends that her escort service, Pamela Martin and Associates, was a legitimate business.

Louisiana’s Democratic governor, Kathleen Blanco, issued a statement saying she was “disappointed” over the [Vitter] revelation and hoped it wouldn’t hurt the state’s efforts to secure federal funding for rebuilding homes damaged by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
