Surprising no one, Russian strongman and current Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is looking like the clear front-runner to become Russia’s next president, reclaiming the office from Dmitry Medvedev, who at times seemed mostly to fill the position of useful political backdrop to make Putin look good in his own office. This despite recent and frequent anti-Putin protests in his homeland, some of which took more whimsical forms than others. –KA

Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin looks sure to reclaim his former position as president next Sunday, with the latest polls giving him around 59.9 percent of the vote.

Putin only needs 50 percent plus one solitary vote in the presidential election to avoid a second round run-off.
