Texas Governor Rick Perry, who burst onto stage after a video showing him shooting a gun, described what he sees as a pattern: When a hate-filled person commits a horrific act, people who hate guns and hate gun owners call for more gun laws, he said. Creating more laws that criminals will ignore is not the solution, said Perry, a Republican.

Despite Congress’ refusal to pass the sort of tepid gun control that, according to polls, nearly all Americans want, the NRA and its allies continue to promote the claim that the government is coming to take away your guns.

Sen. Ted Cruz, another Texan, had the gall to describe the defeat of background check legislation — which, again, more than 9 out of 10 Americans think is a good idea — “the victory of the American people.”

This weekend’s shindig, which is expected to draw 70,000 guests, is the NRA’s largest show of strength since 20 children and 6 adults were killed by guns at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
