After a long primary season involving sudden upswings and fizzles, plus a couple of comebacks, there is little room left for doubt that Mitt Romney is going to be the 2012 Republican presidential nominee now that his biggest competition, in the form of the sweater vest containing Rick Santorum, has dropped out of the contest.

Santorum announced his decision Tuesday in Gettysburg, Pa. Meanwhile, journalist and activist Dan Savage was quick on the Twitter trigger with a ready quip for the occasion: “Rick Santorum was never running for a term in the White House. He was running for a contract with FoxNews. That race was a success.” There you have it. –KA

Rick Santorum suspended his bid for the presidency on Tuesday, removing the last significant obstacle in Mitt Romney’s now all-but-certain march to the Republican presidential nomination.

“We made a decision over the weekend that while this presidential race for us is over for me, and we will suspend our campaign effective today, we are not done fighting,” Santorum said at a press conference in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Tuesday afternoon.

Santorum did not endorse Romney in making his announcement Tuesday, though he did vow to fight to defeat President Obama and help Republicans win the Senate in the fall.
