For the first time, a top Iranian politician has said that his government has the knowledge, skills and technology needed to produce the enriched uranium used in atomic bombs, but that it will never do so.

While Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has insisted that possessing nuclear weapons is a sin and “useless, harmful and dangerous,” President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said that if Iran ever decided to build such weapons, it would do so openly. –ARK

The Guardian:

[Gholamreza Mesbahi] Moghadam, whose views do not represent the government’s policy, said Iran could easily create the highly enriched uranium that is used to build atomic bombs, but it was not Tehran’s policy to go down that route.

“Iran has the scientific and technological capability to produce (a) nuclear weapon, but will never choose this path,” Moghadam told the parliament’s news website, icana.ir.
